Conservatism, as a political ideology and as a programme of certain political parties aligned with conservative objectives, was in many respects opposed to conservatism in the nineteenth century.The Enlightenment had created broad belief in the prospect of improving the human condition—that is, in the concept of progress—as well as a rationalist propensity to tamper with or destroy existing institutions or practises in order to achieve that objective. This belief was powerfully expressed during the French Revolution, and it was strengthened by the early Industrial Revolution and scientific advances.The rationalist politics that resulted accepted a wide range of political positions, including liberal reformism, trade-union socialism (or social democracy), and, eventually, Marxism. Liberal regimes were created in Europe, South America, and North America during the nineteenth century. The leading ideological opponent of classical liberalism during this period was conservatism, but liberalism eventually overcame severe ideological challenges from new opponents like as fascism and communism. whereas Modern Liberalism hold a variety of positions depending on how these principles are interpreted, but they generally support individual rights (including civil and human rights), democracy, secularism, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and a market economy.
