Introduction
1.1 Overview
In our assignment, we have to find out the Boston Consulting Group analysis, SWOT analysis, corporate social responsibility and corporate strategy of a conglomerate company from finance sector. The company that we choose is Malayan Banking Berhad (Maybank). SWOT analysis is usually used in marketing and business in general as a method of identifying opposition for a new venture or strategy (Goodrich, 2013). We can find out the strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats of Maybank by SWOT analysis. Besides that, BCG analysis helps Maybank to analysis which area of business deserves more resource or investment. Next, corporate strategy is the set of business, markets or industries in which an organization competes and the allocation of resources. Last, we will find out the corporate social responsibility of Maybank.
1.2 Background
Malayan Banking Berhad (Maybank) is the biggest banking and financial service group in Malaysia, created by Malaysian businessman Khoo Tech Puat in 31 May 1960. Maybank has over 2200 office in 17 countries and major financial centre in four countries which is New York, London, Singapore and Hong Kong. Maybank has a larger of amount of assets which is more than 100 billion US Dollar, and around 18.6 billion US Dollar of market capitalization, 9.1 billion US Dollar of total equity and 1.2 billion US Dollar of total net profit. Maybank provide many kinds of service and products, such as Islamic banking, commercial banking, Takaful, online banking (Maybank2u), asset management, insurance, trustee services and others.
Maybank is the first bank in Malaysia that computerizes its current and saving account services in October 1978, set up ATM at its Ampang branch in Kuala Lumpur in September 1981. Maybank offer Autophone for making customers the convenience of conducting their banking transactions and payment of selected utility bills such as electric bill, internet bill, telephone bill and other bills through a computerized telephone service in September 1992. In June 2000, Maybank start to provide internet banking service through its online portal www.maybank2u.com. Maybank also is the first bank to offer Malaysia Bancassurance service and become the number one in banc assurance business.
2.1 Organization structure
Organizing is very important to managers because it is how they match work with resources, so organizational plans and decisions can be made and achieved effectively. Organization structure establishes reporting relationships, communication channels and hierarchy in an organization (Batrol 2011). Companies come in all different shapes and sizes, and the same can be said of their organizational structures (Johnson, 2010). Some of the organization structures are tall, they have many layer between the employees and the employers. Organization structures also can be flat, that means they are few of layer between employees and employers. The organization structure of Maybank consider as flat.
There are four common types of departmentalization which are functional structure, divisional structure, hybrid structure and matrix structure. Functional structure is a type of departmentalization where positon are grouped based on specialty. The divisional structure groups employee around geographic areas, product, services and client (McShane and Von Glinow, 2000). The hybrid structure is a departmentalization form with both functional and divisional structure elements at the same management level (Batrol 2011). The matrix structure link with the functional and additional organization structure types.
The departmentalization of Maybank is divisional structure. Divisional structure has four major form which are product, process, geographic and customer. Product division focus on a single product or service, for example of Maybank is Takaful. Process division group jobs on the basis of the process used. Geographic division serves different geographic areas. Maybank have many offices in many countries such as Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia and others. Customer division service different kind of client or customer types, such as retailer, wholesaler or government.
Divisional structure has some advantages. The structure allows divisions to react quickly if needed; they do not need to coordinate with others division. Divisional structure gives a strong customer service orientation because of narrow product or services. A divisional structure means that managers dealing with multiple functions can develop more general management skills.
Divisional structure has several of disadvantages too. The first is duplication of resources in each division. The second is staffs in this structure do not develop in-depth specialization. The third is restriction of innovation to division, the sharing of knowledge is limited to across divisions. The last is employee with divisional structure will neglect of overall goal. Employee may focus on the division immediate goals rather than longer term organizational goals.
