Question:How would a symbolic interactionist explain the problem of obesity?
Symbolic Interaction:In sociology, symbolic interactionism refers to a theoretical basis in which society functions through different people interacting with each other. In this theory, people use symbols as common methods of producing their understandings.
Answer and Explanation:A symbolic interactionist can say that obesity is produced when people in a society use the symbols for marketing, producing, and eating food in such a way that more is better, and that obesity is socially acceptable. For example, in some regions, fast food is commonly sold through advertising symbols. Obese people may be shown in advertisements, or may only be seen in public. In either case, obesity becomes more socially acceptable.
